Very easy to handle despite his size and very willing to be trained. Not the best photo, but the most recent (been out of work 4 months) Note the razor wither!   :Positive

Bellotto
  • Bad reps in general but some real gems to be found as competition mounts for experienced riders. Very athletic with good springy movement and a nice jump. My lad is shaping up to be a nice dressage mount - he has a sensible temperament but is highly intelligent and not for the faint-hearted rider, he requires a very tactful approach. Bellottos are "pocket rockets"!   :Positive

She is so quiet for an off the tracker, its hard to believe that she even raced! She is just so relaxed to ride. Doesn't seem to have much interest in jumping but would make a beautiful hack. I would definetly buy another one of his foals.   :Positive

They are known for arthritic lower joints caused by their terrible hooves. If you can find a sound one I highly recommend it but don't buy it without a vet check and checking its hooves.

  • 1939 By Precipitation out of Maureen, by Son-in-Law, was bred in the UK by the Macdonald-Buchanan family. Precipitation's dam, Double Life, can also be found in many good jumping pedigrees through her other sons Persian Gulf, Holywell and Casanova, while Maureen's sire, Son-in-Law, is another one of the most important influences on National Hunt pedigrees this century. Thus it is not surprising that within a decade of his arrival at Haras du Pin in 1946 Furioso had produced a host of talented show jumpers. In 1964 his son Lutteur B (1955) won the Olympic Gold medal under Pierre d'Oriola, and in 1966 the same rider won the World Championship with Furioso's daughter Pomone B (1959).

From a long-term perspective, Furioso's most influential Anglo-Norman stallion sons were Mexico (1956) and Furioso II (1965), a highly successful sire in Oldenburg and Hanover, while his daughter Tanagra B was the dam of Jalisco B, and his granddaughter Quenotte was the dam of Cor de la Bry?re, a main influence on modern Holsteiner breeding. Seventeen of the top 100 show jumping sires of the 1990s descend from Furioso.

Ladykiller
  • (1961), by Sailing Light out of Lone Beech, by Loaningdale, came to Holstein in 1965, and immediately established one of the studbook's strongest sire lines. Thirty-five of his sons were licensed as sires, among whom the most outstanding were Landgraf I (1966) and Lord (1967). Even though Ladykiller had done nothing of note on the racetrack, he had excellent conformation and a pleasant temperament. He had an intriguing pedigree, in that both his dam and his sire descended from Phalaris in three removes, each was inbred 4 x 4 to Chaucer, and each also had The Tetrarch in the fourth remove of the pedigree, making Ladykiller inbred 4 x 4 to Phalaris, linebred 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 to Chaucer, and 5 x 5 to The Tetrarch.

Ombra Della Sera
  • 1997 by Brave Warrior. I bought a 3yo filly by Ombra Della Sera back in Feb. She had only one start on the Gold Coast, but is the most well-mannered, intelligent and easy to work with horse! Incredibly quiet for a horse of her age. Can do absolutely anything with her, she has a lot of spirit but will only expend energy if she really must!
She has the most beautiful chestnut coppery colouring and gorgeous markings with breath-taking movement, and looks like she'll be able to jump a treat too - though I haven't jumped her yet because her knees closed up quite late.
I would not hesitate to recommend this breeding to anyone who wants a stunning horse to hack, or just a quiet kick about to do trails with.   :Positive

  • So many good horses go back to Precipitation   :Positive
  • He is perhaps the most influential sire of all, and while his influence on jumping horses has long been recognised, some of the most exciting dressage horses in the world today trace their ancestry to this great sire.

As with most great horses, the story starts with an exceptional mare, in this case Double Life, the foundation mare of one of Britain's most famous studs, Someries Stud near Newmarket. Double Life was a wiry, insignificant looking, washy chestnut with a plain head, and she never measured more than 15.3 hands. She was a good racehorse, an even better broodmare. She had eight foals, the second of which was the chestnut colt, Precipitation, born in 1933. Precipitation's sire, Hurry On, was coming to the end of his life, but in the 1920s he had sired three English Derby winners. Precipitation won seven races for ?18,419 in stakes. At stud, he was a huge success as a sire of racehorses but more importantly for our story, several of his sons became enormously influential performance horse sires.

Raise A Native
  • By Ron Parker
It is no coincidence that the soundness of the thoroughbred breed has deteriorated dangerously over the past few decades as the influence of Raise a Native has spread.
In an article from 1985, Capps wrote:
"Raise a Native's colts have been better than his fillies as a rule, although he has sired several good fillies, and his sons have also done well as progenitors of good racing females.
"As physical types, the Raise a Natives are also varied, ranging from compact, sometimes muscular, sometimes light-boned horses, to big, coarse, powerful specimens. They are frequently rather straight-pasterned, and many either turn out in their forelegs or have offset knees. These characteristics lead to osselets and other ankle or knee problems, and it is fair to say that Raise a Native tends to sire a lot of horses which have difficulty staying sound, as did he and several of his immediate ancestors.
The problem with Raise a Native is the old axiom about too much of a good thing. A single line of his blood usually didn't court disaster unless mixed with too many other unsound influences.
The most recent glaring example of this perceived 'more is better' thinking is, of course, Eight Belles, who carried no less than three crosses of Raise a Native (3D x 4S x 4D). Native Dancer, Raise a Native's suspect sire, contributes four crosses, adding a dose of fragile Dixieland Band through Natalma. And let's not leave out Eight Belle's sire, Unbridled's Song, subject of the first article in this series on Unsound Breeding.
Eight Belles sustained compound fractures of both front legs at the fetlock joints prompting everyone with an opinion to blame the jockey, the trainer, the track...everything but the most obvious fact that this was a pedigree saturated with unsoundness.
Maybe "these things" started with a 5S x 5S cross of Raise a Native (and a 6S x 6S x 6D dash of "blessing and a curse" Native Dancer). Add a touch of unsound Danzig and you have a recipe for b-r-e-a-k-d-o-w-n.
Singularly, Raise a Native is not the kiss of death, but combining intrinsic unsoundness with more unsoundness without regard to the welfare of the animal is not only another step in the de-evolution of the breed, it?s morally unjust.

  • My friend has a gelding by him and he has to be the most crankiest horse I ever come across. Maybe it was the way he was handled before she got him or maybe its the bloodline? He is a typical hot head off the tracker. He can jump but, hewill tackle anything, he is just so bold.   :Neutral

Twig Moss
  • 1973. I had a lovely OTT TB by Twig Moss years ago that was so trainable and easy to do anything with. I thought he may have been a 'one off' but a friend of mine has recently bought and started eventing a Twig Moss horse that is just as agreeable. Would recommend in the pedigree.   :Positive

Victory Drive
  • 1993 by Gone West. Victory Drive is a stunning 16hh stallion standing in WA. He isn't much of a 'commercial' sire and hasn't thrown much to brag about for the track. They are however beautiful looking horses, usually chestnut with chrome, beautiful movers and make gorgeous hacks. They have good hooves too!

I have heard that they have some dirt in them but haven't found this with the ones I have dealt with and also heard the stallion himself is a gentleman.

Vitrinite
  • Lovely horses. The two I have had anything to do with have been tall horses with a lovely frame. Good movers too.
More suited to the hack ring then anything else.

One did have a clubbed foot though so probably something to look out for with them. But the other one had lovely straight legs.   :Positive

Volsung
  • My gelding by Volsung (AUS) 1967 out of Mead (AUS) 1973 by Kalgoorlie (AUS) 1964 (By Star Kingdom (IRE) 1946). This amazing boy show jumped up to six feet with a professional rider and up to five feet with me as a novice 16 year old. He could be quite hot at times but had an uncanny knack of knowing what was required and he delivered every time. Completely unphased by BIG jumps, he would rather go through them than stop. Very, very bold. I loved him to pieces. He sadly passed at the age of 27 years. RIP my amazing friend.   :Positive
